In April of 2005, HIP participated in the Council on Foundations conference in San Diego. In addition to holding our annual membership meeting, HIP sponsored a variety of panels and a site visit to Mexico.

During the membership meeting, we elected new board members and reviewed HIP business.  Then, Alberto Ibargüen, the newly elected president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and former publisher of the Miami Herald, who is also the Chair of the Public Broadcasting Service, reflected on the role of Latinos in the media and in philanthropy, as well as his new responsibilities as the president of a large foundation.

Following his remarks, three prominent Latino filmmakers, Patricia Cardoso (Real Women Have Curves), Alex Rivera (The Sixth Section) and Amy Serrano (Of Hope, Courage and Justice: A Global Mosaic of Women in Human Rights),  showed clips of their films.  After which, Patricia Boero (Hispanics in Philanthropy) moderated a panel with the filmmakers,  Miguel Satut (W.K. Kellogg Foundation) and Tomás Ybarra-Frausto (Rockefeller Foundation).  The panel discussed new philanthropic investments in the intellectual and cultural capital of Latino communities and implications on economic development, education and community health.
