The campaign focuses on the issues faced by Latino children and families whose lives and challenges cross national boundaries, including unaccompanied children detained and often abused at the borders, the trafficking of children, and children and families separated by current immigration policies. First Lady Zavala and Mr. LaMarche launched HIP's initiative in May 2008 as they shared their perspectives on these issues, framing a series of 25th anniversary events that will be held in 2008 and 2009. |

| New Grant Round in Massachusetts-Rhode Island -- Proposals Due June 15th |
| | It is with great enthusiasm that HIP announces the 4th Round of Grants in Massachusetts/Rhode Island. As of May 7, we have released the RFP inviting Latino nonprofits to submit a proposal for a capacity-building grant. The deadline for submission is June 15, 2007.
Additionally, HIP will be offering three Applicant Information Sessions on May 21 in Springfield, MA,* and on May 22 in Boston, MA and Providence, RI. At these sessions, we will present a brief overview of the Funders’ Collaborative, we will discuss capacity building and we will answer any questions regarding the application process and timeline.
* For the May 21 Session in Springfield, please note that the Applicant Information Session will be held in the Hampden East Room of the Marriott Hotel, next to the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Directions to the Hotel are the same as to get to the Foundation; however, you will use the elevators for the Marriott rather than the Office Tower. |

More than 70 million people in the U.S. live below the poverty line, and many of them are children. While poverty cuts across all races and ethnicities, it particularly affects the Latino family. In Los Angeles, hundreds of children are growing up in the toxic environment of downtown Los Angeles’ skid row.
The HIP program will feature video clips of a documentary, ”We’re Not Bad Kids,” directed by 14-year-old Franklin Antonio Arburtha, an Afro-Latino who is a seven-year resident of the Ford SRO Hotel. The video includes interviews with some of the children of skid row and candid glimpses of their squalid living conditions. The video was produced by the United Coalition East Prevention Project.

| | The Leadership Conference brings together Latino nonprofits and funders interested in Latino issues. Nonprofits and funders will have their own program tracks, and the tracks will partially overlap, allowing for dialogue and information exchange. The entire event will dovetail with the Joint Affinity Groups Summit, a convening of 300 funders who work toward greater inclusiveness in philanthropy, affording funders an opportunity to continue the dialogue from the HIP Leadership Conference with another audience of grantmakers interested in diversity. |
